Cats are bums.

Hey everyone, long time no see! I’ve been insanely busy with school since starting to learn 3D. Since then I’ve been trying to cram everything I can in my brain about 3D and animation in general. Also I’ve taken a story boarding and animatic class, so my drawing has improved tremendously. The secret has just been doing it everyday, all day long. I’ve had to really focus and cut out all things that distract me from learning, so that’s why I haven’t posted much lately. I do however have some exciting things planned for the online world so check back later.

So about cats… There is this neighborhood cat that lives near my house. She is obviously owned, since she has a collar, but she stays outside. Well, let’s just say she’s the nicest and most sociable cat I’ve ever met. Lately I will come home and she’s near my house to greet me. Though, one night, I made the mistake of giving her a treat… now she constantly begs for more. She will sit outside the window and just meow for minutes.

I actually find it quite funny.

Just keep drawing!

Hi all!

Like a derailed train, school just keeps on going! I’m enjoying the ride. I plan on posting a ton of art near Thanksgiving. School is busy, but I love it!

My storyboard class has helped me learn to draw quick and clearly. The picture for this post is my new style I’ve learned this semester for story boarding. I don’t believe we only have one style, but rather a whole collection of styles we can learn that will suite each special project.

Tree and House study

  • 1.5 hours
  • 1 layer
  • From real life :D

So, there’s this daily sketch club that I just found on facebook. Today’s word was “Batman” so being unoriginal, I decided to draw a fan sketch of Baman watching TV.

  • Drawn with my finger using Brushes on my ipod
  • You can watch the adventures of “Baman and Piderman” on Youtube.
    They. Are. Hilarious! :D

Clouds from imagination by observation

It’s been a busy summer, but I’ve managed to still study light. No matter where I am or what I am doing, there is always something that seems to dance in it. Not even a diamond can show its sparkle without light.

I was pulling out Trumpet Vine roots the other day, and I looked over my shoulder. Behold, before my eyes, there were beautiful clouds emerging like mountains in the atmosphere. No camera could have captured what I saw, and this painting only does little justice for them. After making the Crush can on the iPad, I became curious what I could do on my tiny iPod Touch screen. So this painting was the result. It proves to me that I can paint on such a tiny screen, and that I should definitely do it more often.

Stay cool. It’s hot out there.

I had my first opportunity to draw on a friend’s iPad. I must admit, it was nice to finger paint.

• Drawn from life

Ps. A little note about light: if you look at the rim of the can there are yellow and blue highlights. This occurs because the natural light from the outside was blue, while the light from electric bulbs inside was a warm yellow color. This in turn affects the color of the can. The magenta (hot pink) can in yellow light looks more red, but in blue light it looks more pink. When objects turn toward a light source, identify the objects actual (key) color, then shift it by adding the key color + light color. This will help determine what color to paint. The highlight will give away the light source’s color.

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away… whatever that means.

After I adjusted the color of the grass, I think it helped the effect I was going for. The grass was too saturated. You can see the first example here.

Some observations to note about objects lit outside:

  • Nature is not as saturated as we tend to think it is. There are a lot of yellow greys in sunlight, and blue greys in shadow.
  • I read somewhere that shadow is 40% darker than sunlight
  • The color and intensity of sunlight changes depending on the time of day. I might get into that later.

Last month John Seerey-Lester came to campus and did a painting demo of a gorilla! As he painted, I did the same in my big sketchbook. He used acrylics, while I used watercolor. I was in an auditorium seat, so there was little room to paint, thus watercolor being my best option.

It was awesome painting with him, as I think the best way to learn art is to do it with someone; a guide. I learned a ton about foreground, mid-ground, and background. His method with acrylics is to start light with an underpainting, then continue getting darker. Once your values are close, you can use washes to push certain features back into the distance to create an atmospheric effect.

He signed my sketchbook, and is super nice! The best part is all the stories he has to share from being in the wild. It was nice to have a little entertainment while he painted. ^_^

So obviously yesterday was “Draw a bird day”, (yeah I had no idea), but I had to draw animals for class anyway. I ended up drawing a flamingo.
